According to the "Plastic News" report, the National Innovation Agency of Thailand and Nova Institute GmbH of Germany recently stated in an analysis report that by 2020, Asia's bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) resin production capacity will exceed North America, ranking first in the world.
It is estimated that the global PLA capacity will climb from 182,000 tons in 2011 to 721,000 tons in 2020, while the capacity in Asia is expected to be close to half, exceeding 350,000 tons. Former North America is the world's largest producer of PLA, accounting for two-thirds of the world's total output, more than 120,000 tons, and is expected to increase to approximately 200,000 tons by 2020.
As the governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and other Asian countries have introduced policies to support the development of various types of bio-based materials, and Asia has a large number of agricultural raw materials, these have become PLA's driving force. However, the demand for PLA in Asian domestic markets is still not high, which also means that most of the new production capacity in the region will be used for export.
Thailand is expected to become the new bioplastic center. PTT Chemical Public Co. Ltd., Thailand’s largest plastics manufacturer, bought a 50% stake in US PLA giant Natureworks LLC last year. In addition, the Thai government has invested huge research funds in the bioplastics field since 2008. Natureworks currently has 85% of the world's PLA production. Even if other companies expand globally, Natureworks may account for more than 50% of global total capacity by 2020.
As the quality of lactic acid raw materials in Chinese enterprises did not pass, China's PLA resin production “substantially decreased†during 2007-2011. Affected by this, China’s PLA imports increased from approximately 1,200 tons in 2007 to 4,000 tons last year.
