China-Myanmar oil and gas pipeline project will start

On the 3rd, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council of the Republic of China met with Myanmar’s Chairman of the State Peace and Development Commission, Than Shwe.


Premier Wen Jiabao first conveyed greetings from President Hu Jintao to Tan Rui. Wen Jiabao said that China and Myanmar are connected by mountains and rivers, and their origins are deep. The peoples of the two countries share a traditional friendship. Dan Rui asked Wen Jiabao to convey greetings from President Hu Jintao. Than Shwe said that Myanmar and China are friendly neighbors. Premier Wen Jiabao visited Myanmar on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This shows that the Chinese government and people attach great importance to the development of Myanmar-China relations.


According to reports, the China-Myanmar oil and gas pipeline project, which has received much attention, will officially start construction. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Myanmar Prime Minister Deng Sheng attended the signing ceremony of the relevant documents after the meeting on the 3rd at noon and jointly touched the electronic ball marked with the logo.


China-Myanmar oil and gas pipeline construction plan was put forward in 2004. According to the plan, the starting point of the pipeline was in the port city of Burma, and the end point was in Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan, China. The total length was 2,380 kilometers. The annual design capacity of the tubing is 20 million tons, equivalent to approximately 400,000 barrels per day.


Data from the Myanmar Ministry of Commerce shows that Myanmar has the tenth-largest natural gas reserves in the world, with a confirmed natural gas reserve of 2,540 billion cubic meters, and a proven crude oil reserve of 3.2 billion barrels.
