Cummins wins the 2009 Intermat Innovation and Environment Award

April 21st, 2009 - Cummins B-Series 3.3-liter diesel engine powered by the French McClark 12MTX hybrid wheeled excavator won the Mechanical Innovation Gold Award and the Environmental Contribution Special Award Laurel. The Cummins B 3.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, rated at 68 hp (51 kW), drives a set of motor-generators and lithium-ion battery systems, which saves 25% on fuel consumption while reducing diesel CO2 emissions and lowers noise.

The 12MTX hybrid machinery with a total weight of 9 tons is a versatile machine that can be used as an excavator, loader, material handling equipment, and can quickly realize other functions by adding other tool accessories. This compact, flexible hybrid 12MTX is Mecalac Ahlmann's new generation of innovative models for projects in urban centers that require operation in limited space.

The Cummins B3.3 engine is integrated with the diesel-electric hybrid system to improve fuel economy by optimizing engine speed. The 68 horsepower (51 kilowatts) mechanical power output meets the average power demand of the equipment. When the power demand is less than 68 horsepower, the remaining power is used to charge the battery pack; and when the power demand is higher than 68 horsepower, the generator effectively supplements the power gap and can achieve a power output of 99 hp (74 kilowatts). Through a closed-loop electronic control system, precise control of the conversion of mechanical energy and electrical energy between the diesel engine and the electric motor is performed.

B3.3 compact structure, effectively reducing the installation size of the entire diesel-electric system. Cummins B3.3 operates directly in parallel with a 20/40 hp Heinzmann motor connected to a hydraulic pump to drive the equipment. The engine itself does not require a starter motor or alternator. The diesel-electric system stores electric energy through a 440-volt lithium battery. When the device is braked, the energy is recovered and converted into electrical energy stored in the battery. The diesel-electric hybrid system is simple in structure and easy to maintain.

The Cummins B3.3 litre engine meets the Stage IIIA/Tier 4 Interim emission standards and particulate emissions are reduced to 0.3/g. kWh. B3.3 The use of a clean combustion mode to control fuel injectors and turbochargers significantly improves the environmental performance of the 12MTX hybrid excavator.

B3.3 uses a reinforced cast iron cylinder body, a deep rigid crankcase, and a stiffener design for long life and excellent durability.
