European demand for barrier PET containers soars

In a study published in mid-June 2008, Schuwald Consulting, a German-based specialist packaging market research company, stated that in the next five years, European demand for barrier PET containers will increase to 9 per year. The growth rate of % will increase from 2.9 billion in 2007 to 4.5 billion in 2012.

It is said that barrier PET bottles account for only 2.5% of the European PET bottle market, but the demand for barrier PET bottles will increase by 50% faster than the entire PET bottle market.

It is reported that in 2007 the largest use of barrier PET bottles in Europe was in the field of beer packaging, which consumed about 1.6 billion barrier PET bottles, which accounted for 55% of the overall market share; followed by the use of slurry and slurry beverage packaging, which consumed a total of 1050 million barrier PET bottles accounted for 36% of the market; about 250 million bottles for mineral water packaging accounted for 9% of the market share.
It is said that in the above applications, nearly 80% of barrier PET bottles use multilayer or single-layer composite technology, and another 670 million barrier PET bottles use coating technology. Experts predict that the market share of multi-layer technologies will decrease in the future, and the adoption of single-layer composite and coating technologies will increase.
