Glyphosate industry brewing "environmentally friendly" storm

China Drying Network News The Ministry of Environmental Protection will launch a new round of comprehensive environmental protection verification actions for all industries in the near future, including the pesticide industry to which glyphosate belongs. At the end of last year, after submitting the “Emission Standards for Water Pollutants of Organophosphorus Pesticide Industry”, the environmental verification of glyphosate was still targeted only at large companies. Comprehensive verification was the first time. If the verification fails, the relevant companies will face production suspension or even elimination.

An industry official who asked not to be named stated that the main content of the environmental verification of glyphosate was whether the three-waste treatment of the glyphosate manufacturer met the standard and the focus was on the discharge of sewage, ie, the mother liquor wastewater produced by the glycine method glyphosate. Treatment is up to standard. If the standards are not met, the relevant companies will only stop production. It is expected that a large number of manufacturers that do not have sewage treatment capacity will be eliminated.

A “2011-2015 China Pesticide Market Investment Analysis and Prospect Forecast Report” released by China Investment Advisor shows that wastewater is the main pollutant in the production of glyphosate. It is estimated that every ton of glyphosate produced will produce more than 1 ton of difficult-to-handle wastewater. The waste water has the characteristics of high concentration of pollutants, large toxicity, high salt content, high content of refractory compounds, complex composition of pollutants, difficulty in treatment, and the like, which will bring serious water pollution problems.

It is understood that glycine production of glyphosate will produce large amounts of wastewater, and most of the domestic pesticide companies are small in scale and do not have sufficient funds to deploy advanced environmental protection equipment. This makes the water pollution problem in China's glyphosate industry more serious. By establishing standards for wastewater discharge, some companies that do not have wastewater treatment capacity will be eliminated.

The latest statistics show that as of July 10, 2012, there are about 130 glyphosate companies registered in China, and 17 companies with a capacity of not less than 10,000 tons (accounting for 60% of total production capacity). There are 7 less than 30,000 tons (40% of total production capacity), including Jinfanda, Xinan, Jiangshan, Huafu Chemicals, Red Sun, Yangnong Chemical, and good harvesting; the remaining approximately 110 production capacity Not reached 10,000 tons (40% of total production capacity). According to the above analysis, the suspension of production of glyphosate companies that do not meet environmental standards will reduce the total capacity of domestic enterprises.

It is because of the large number of small and medium-sized enterprises in the glyphosate industry in China that the discharge of wastewater is a serious problem. The environmental protection verification of the glyphosate industry is imperative. In November 2011, the “Organic Phosphorus Pesticide Industrial Water Pollutant Discharge Standard” (draft for review) jointly prepared by the China Pesticide Industry Association, the China Chemical Industry Environmental Protection Association and the Shenyang Chemical Industry Institute (000698) has been reported to the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Environmental verification will become an effective means to maintain the healthy and sustainable development of the industry.

After the “standards” mentioned above were reported to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the environmental protection inspection for the whole industry of glyphosate was the first time (in the beginning of this year, the environmental protection verification for large companies was done once). An industry researcher stated that the most important issue of environmental protection verification is not its verification content, but its verification strength and verification effect. If the verification of small enterprises that fail to meet the standard is directly suspended, the production capacity will be reduced correspondingly. Currently, the price of glyphosate is decreasing. Domestic leading enterprises will benefit from the continuous increase.
