Norway develops new broadband fish echo detector

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Norwegian research team headed by Professor Egil Ona of the Bergen Institute of Oceanography has recently developed a new generation of fish echo detectors.
The echo detectors used on general fishing vessels are usually capable of receiving signals at six frequencies. The new echo detector can receive 100 frequencies at the same time, so it is easier to detect deep-sea fish and plankton than the previous detectors. Behavior, quantity and volume and the size of plankton around the fish. The broadband echo can provide better target information based on the echo image of the echo image, helping people to accurately determine the type of fish, such as salmon, trout, squid and plankton.
Professor Ona's research titled “Exploring Plane Bacterial Characteristics and Scale Assessment of New Broadband Echo Techniques” (WESTZOO) was funded by the Norwegian Research Council “Marine and Coastal Research Project” (HAVKYST). Professor Ona believes that the echo detector will become a necessary standard tool for future scientific research fishing boats, marking a new leap in the study of Norwegian fishery back acoustics.
The product will be launched in 2013 and will be commercialized by Simrad Technologies, a subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime AS.
In addition, the researchers also developed stereo cameras and sound detectors for measuring deep-sea organisms. The images taken by the camera can verify the data of the echometer. The sound detector can detect the depth of 1500 meters underwater, and can distinguish between fish and float. Creatures and their quantities.
