Omron and STMicroelectronics Collaborate to Achieve Smarter Gas Meters

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) and world-renowned automation technology provider Omron announced the development of an integrated solution for electronic gas meter flow sensors. The flow sensor developed jointly by both companies is one of the key components of the gas meter solution that STMicroelectronics is developing.

Just as a meter a few years ago, gas meters are now beginning to evolve from traditional mechanical watches into new electronic gas meters that incorporate automatic meter reading (AMR) functions. STMicroelectronics estimates that there are currently approximately 500 million mechanical gas meters in the world. Most gas companies are currently preparing to replace these traditional gas meters with electronic gas meters with greater accuracy, reliability, and energy efficiency.

This collaboration is a combination of a leader in metering chips and a leader in automation technology. Omron's unique transducers, combined with ST's analog front-end chips, are the core technology of this unique cooperation project. The two high-value technologies are integrated into a complete and independent smart gas meter subsystem. The final flow sensor incorporates the most advanced MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) micro-thermal sensor technology that corrects deviations caused by temperature and pressure changes, while the built-in compensation circuit corrects deviations caused by variations in various gas compositions. The sensor is dust-proof and complies with the international gas meter standard.

Yoshio Sekiguchi, Senior General Manager of Omron Microelectronics Products Division, said: "After our success with STMicroelectronics' MEMS microphone cooperation project, we believe that this new cooperation will push both parties to the forefront of the emerging market for electronic gas meters."

Featuring high accuracy and low power consumption, the gas flow sensor is mounted on a small printed circuit board (PCB) of 7.2 x 8.6 cm. The built-in valve controls the motor driver and the temperature change correction and anti-vibration function. The sensor board includes an ultra-low-power STM8L152 microcontroller, STLM20 temperature sensor, LIS332AR accelerometer, M41T82 real-time clock, power management chip, and motor controller, where the microcontroller is equipped with 32KB flash memory and LCD panel driver.

Benedetto Vigna, general manager of MEMS, sensors and high-performance analog products at STMicroelectronics, said: “As the market's demand for smart gas meters begins to heat up, cooperation with Omron allows us to quickly seize market opportunities and replicate our acquisition in the smart meter market. The huge success of this gas meter assembly will significantly reduce the procurement costs of gas meter manufacturers and accelerate time-to-market."

The technical cooperation between STMicroelectronics and Omron was first started in November 2009. This cooperation will further strengthen the leading position of STMicroelectronics in the increasingly important field of smart metering. In the field of electric meters, gas meters and water meters, micro-sensors and Ultra-low-power microcontrollers work together to collect energy usage data with greater accuracy and reliability, and upload this data to a remote host system for processing. The host provides real-time energy usage and usage information to help Consumers minimize the use of non-renewable resources.

STMicroelectronics will participate in the electronic fair in Munich, November 9-12, 2010. At STMicroelectronics' booth (hall A5, booth 207), visitors can request more detailed information from both companies.

PE/PP Pelletizing Machine

PE/PP Pelletizing Machine Is Mainly Used for The Production and Processing Of Plastic Products Made Of PE And PP.

The Plastic Film Is Heated and Compacted Using a Compaction Knife, Making It Easier to Feed the Material into The Extruder. It Is Equipped with A Water Ring Cutting and Pelletizing System on The Die Surface to Make the Cut Particles Uniform. The Final Particles Can Be Used for Film Blowing, Tube Making and Other Uses.
