Scientists invent new materials: under pressure to generate electricity

Researchers at the Federal Institute for Materials Science and Technology in Switzerland have developed a flexible new material that produces electrical current during stretching and compression. Applications include pacemakers and clothing.

The piezoelectric effect makes this material possible. This effect is most common in analog recording players because it plays music by reading the groove of the record. By the piezoelectric effect, these vibrations are translated into electrical pulses that produce sound waves. The process of converting mechanical motion into electrical energy is also a change in the material created by the researchers.

Not only has Dorina Opris and her colleagues created an incredible material that has broken the boundaries of what we know about piezoelectric effects. Until then, it was only observed in crystals, but Opris and her team demonstrated that these properties can also be present in elastic materials.

Unfortunately, this exciting new material is not easy to produce. Polar nanoparticles and silica gel must be processed before being connected. Then, a strong electric field is introduced into the thin, flexible film and the piezoelectric effect is created by exposing the material to very hot and then extremely cold temperatures.

This material is undoubtedly interesting. But besides the novelty, it may also have a surprisingly large number of unique applications. Because of its slim, pliable, organic features, it operates more seamlessly with the human body than bulky electronics.

Because of this, it is considered for use in pressure sensors, pacemakers and other medical devices. The material can also be used for garments, control buttons, and even wearable displays that generate current through the wearer's movement.
