BMW AG spoke on “AABC 2012†(Orlando, USA, February 6-10, 2012) on the hybrid battery “ActiveHybrid 5†and on-vehicle batteries for the “ActiveE†electric vehicle for road demonstration test.
The ActiveHybrid 5 battery pack uses 96 4Ah cylindrical units from A123 Systems. The capacity is 1.35kWh, the voltage range is 200V to 385V, the volume is 40L, and the weight is 46kg. In order to suppress unit deterioration, BMW has defined the state of charge (SOC) of the battery in addition to the water cooling method. Therefore, only 0.6kWh of capacity is actually used.
In the speech, BMW also talked about the cost of the battery pack. The cost of the unit in the battery pack is about 45%. In order to reduce costs in the future, it is necessary to reduce the cost of peripheral components in addition to the unit.
ActiveE's battery pack uses 192 (2 parallel × 96 series) 40Ah square units from SB LiMotive. The capacity is 32kWh and the voltage is 355V. Water cooling is the same as ActiveHybrid 5. BMW said that it will use ActiveE's empirical test results for the mass production EV "i3" that will be launched in 2013.
