Yang Xiangping, former general manager of Beijing Drainage Group and currently director of the Water Association's Water Drainage Committee, talked about the current status of sludge disposal in China. In the past 30 years of reform and opening up, urban construction has grown rapidly. The number of cities has increased from 193 to 664. The number of sewage treatment plants has increased from 37 to more than 2,800. The sewage treatment capacity has increased from 640,000 tons to 128.67 million tons per day. The national urban sewage treatment rate has reached 73%. The production of dewatered sludge in China has increased from 150 tons per day in 1978 to 68,000 tons per day in 2010, an increase of more than 450 times. The treatment and disposal of sludge should be based on local conditions. For large cities, it can be promoted and dried. For example, the Shidongkou project promotes centralized disposal of medium-sized cities. For small-scale sewage treatment plants to be constructed on a large scale, small-scale compost facilities should be promoted.
