Halma, a UK-based manufacturer of specialty optical fibers and components, has partnered with Micron Optics, a sensor manufacturer, to create fiber Bragg grating optical sensor. The optical sensor is suitable for detecting distributed stress sensing, temperature, strain, displacement and acceleration in machinery, equipment, aircraft, buildings, bridges and other equipment and structures.
In the cooperation agreement, Micron Optical International is responsible for the design of optical fiber Bragg grating optical sensors, and Fabio Bourg is responsible for building the process of production processes and refinement and improvement. Multiple Bragg gratings will be built into the core of the optical sensor, acting as a mirror, reflecting light of a particular wavelength based on the periodicity of the grating.
When a Bragg grating is subjected to stress changes or temperature changes, the wavelength of the reflected light is shifted, and the degree of displacement is proportional to the change in stress or temperature. Unlike conventional electronic sensors, fiber Bragg grating sensors are not susceptible to signal degradation due to long distances or electromagnetic interference.
The fiber Bragg grating optical sensor is a compact, compact sensor that can be installed in confined spaces. The optical sensor also supports multiplexing technology that allows multiplexing of multiple signals and locations of sensors on a single fiber.
