Experts believe that the lack of R&D investment and poor ability to independently innovate is one of the major issues facing auto parts companies in China. According to the general statistics of foreign companies, the average investment of the parts and components industry should be 1.2 to 1.5 times that of the entire vehicle company, while the current situation in China is below 0.3, which is significantly lower than the international average. In developed countries, the research and development capabilities of auto parts companies have been ahead of vehicle companies. With the development of a new car, 70% of the intellectual property rights belong to auto parts companies, while the vast majority of parts and components companies in China do not have product development capabilities. Product development mainly depends on the host plant, it is difficult to adapt to the requirements of the entire vehicle replacement.
Dong Jianping, deputy secretary-general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, believes that in recent years, China's auto parts companies have not given full attention to innovation and have encountered many bottlenecks. For example, China's commercial vehicles are about to implement the National III emission standards, involving a diesel common rail technology, and our diesel engines mainly use piston-type high-pressure oil pumps. To achieve the national III standard, it is impossible to use traditional technology, and it is necessary to achieve a leap from mechanical to electronic control technology. If it is not innovative, it will be eliminated if it does not break through. At present, many foreign companies have established wholly-owned technology centers in China. In these places, we do not master the core technologies and only grasp some applied technologies. If we do not engage in independent innovation, we will become increasingly marginalized.
