It's a shame Chinese people don’t open Chinese cars.
Wang Delun graduated from Dalian University of Technology in 1990. He went to the United States as a visiting scholar in 1994. He worked at Chrysler Corporation as a vehicle body controller. He returned to China in 2002 and served as a professor in the Department of Vehicles at Chongqing Automobile College. In December 2003, he joined Chongqing Lifan Group as a Automotive Project Technical Director.
China’s acute shortage of automotive experts, Chinese technicians abroad also want to report to the country, according to the general idea, senior technical staff with foreign companies working background, after returning home should choose a large, long history of large-scale enterprises to serve, Not only individuals have a face, but also from the standpoint of revitalizing the national auto industry. This kind of company has a good foundation, a high starting point and a large stage, and it is easy to produce results. But on the contrary, in recent years, senior technical talents who have returned to China have been reluctant to work in large enterprises. Wang Delun is one. He chose to work for Lifan Group, a privately-owned enterprise that had not yet qualified for a car at that time. It was rather puzzling because he did not understand the situation, or did he not receive good treatment from big companies.
Dr. Wang Delun told reporters that although he has been working abroad for a long time, he has gone out of the country after all and communicated very closely with domestic information. He is very familiar with the situation of his domestic counterparts. If you want to talk about treatment, you will not choose to return to your country. To say that it is patriotic and too high, it is mainly time that you cannot afford. The technology he now has is very new, and the time goes by. Now that the technology has been updated very quickly and you are looking for a job in the United States, if the resume says something that was done three years ago, nobody else will take care of you because you are already an outsider. Working in a large foreign company is very professional. You can only do it all the time. Face is very narrow. It is boring to do the same thing every day. It is a waste of life. Therefore, you want to return to the country to do something really.
Before going abroad, he also felt that he did not understand why foreigners could make a good car. Can the Chinese not do it? During their stay in the United States, these Chinese who have gone abroad generally have an idea: It is a shame that the Chinese do not open Chinese cars. Because Koreans and Japanese are buying cars made in their own country, many of their cars are developed by Chinese people. Wang Delun said: "When I came to the United States to do body control, I first went to an expert and the technology was learned in China. It was not that the Chinese did not master the technology, but there were many conditions that prevented the Chinese from doing it." A highly practical profession requires a team. The mechanism of state-owned enterprises determines that they will not go for real experts, nor will they have strong integration capabilities, and they will not be able to achieve world-class standards. Therefore, they will not want to go to state-owned enterprises after they return home.
Wang Delun analyzed the current status of the Chinese auto industry and believed that the most important thing for Chinese cars is the "heart", that is, the engine. The core technology of the engine is the electronic control system. So he went abroad to study engine EFI and gearbox. After returning from studying in 1997, I was also sincere in working for state-owned enterprises. However, when I went to state-owned enterprises, I couldn’t do it. The government’s policy is to support the assembly of erroneous parts and vehicles. I just want to make quick money and it is not like the way the auto industry looks. So he Again chose to go abroad and once again arrived in the United States. He said: "At that time, you can also get a good salary, but there is no sense of accomplishment."
Without a new product company, it's really finished.
Despite being in a foreign country, Wang Delun is still convinced that Chinese auto companies will certainly replace GM and Toyota in the future and become the world's number one, so he returned to China.
Wang Delun said that although the car is a high-tech industry, it is not yet high enough for the Chinese to do. The core problem is that we are pressing ourselves. Some are people who do not really understand the development of automobiles, and they scare the Chinese there. This will not be developed, and it will not be developed. This is not the case. Go to the United States in Detroit to see who the best engine, transmission, and computer-aided engineering are. Chinese people! There are many Chinese people working in the American automotive industry. More than 20 people who recently went to Lifan to recruit have all worked at the top three automotive companies. All of them are top-level masters.
Wang Delun stressed that independent development is very important for a company. Can it develop a new car and decide whether or not you can be independent? In the United States, even if the company has no money, it can shut down the factory, but the design department will still operate. If there is no new product company, it will be completely finished.
When it comes to the autonomous development capability of Chinese cars, Wang Delun said that there is nothing wrong with how many years it takes to develop a brand new chassis and how much money to invest, but we have no reason to go any further. Take a look at all the major companies in the world. Which models are not referenced when developing new models? The first step in the development of a new car is to minimize its work under the premise of avoiding intellectual property disputes; the second step is to improve the defects that have been confirmed; and the third step is to create something original. In the same way, the first step in the development of China's auto industry is to draw lessons from it. The second step is to transform it. The third step is to develop new things. Why did Lifan spend a lot of money and successfully develop the "520" in a short time? It is because of the early development. He said: "We are not incapable of doing this now, but we do not have time to do it."
Wang Delun thinks that the current domestic environment for building cars is very good. The world's largest spare parts companies have all come to China, and domestic supporting plants have also grown up. The things needed to build cars can be found without going abroad. "Is it really the key to our success if we have the ability to integrate?"
He said that Japanese cars have just left the country and sold their products to the most competitive market, the United States. Honda’s first overseas factory was built in the United States. At first, Honda's products were not popular in the United States, so the price was very cheap, more than 6000 US dollars a car. However, after eight years, the residual value of the Honda car was even higher than that of a US car that sold for US$15,000. The people began to accept it. Not only did the sales volume increase, the selling price also continued to rise. Honda now has a market share of over 10% in the United States, second only to Toyota, and it is second, and at the beginning, it was attributed to the "other" category, with a total of less than 6%. When products begin to enter the market, they must make profits, they must not rely on low prices to fight sales, even if they lose money to earn money. To give consumers a trial opportunity, give him a sure-footed pill, he will take the risk, let the time prove the quality, wait 5 years, 10 years later, the brand created, and then slowly make money. How enterprises make money is a door of learning, Wang Delun said, can not be short-term behavior, this is the way to do a hundred-year-old shop.
The road to the joint venture will not go too long
Wang Delun believes that the road of Chinese joint ventures will not go too long. Once the Chinese government allows foreign car companies to invest their capital, foreign companies may no longer give new models to joint venture companies. By then, decades of joint venture contracts will become their future. The yoke on the neck.
Some people are worried that transnational corporations have strong economic strength. Will they use the loss-making method to compete with our own independent enterprises and kill their own companies in the cradle?
Wang Delun is not worried about this. He said that he has worked for three major companies in the United States for many years and he knows that the burden on these companies is too heavy. For example, Chrysler, it is still equipped with a two-valve engine, and now there are two-valve engine? Because Chrysler has no money to develop a new engine. Why does the United States not increase emission standards and why is it not limited to fuel consumption per 100 kilometers? Because the three major American car companies cannot do it, they lobby Congress and do not allow legislation to pass.
Wang Delun also believes that when it comes to price competition, even Japanese and South Korean companies will not compete with Chinese companies. The cost structure of each company is different, and the cost of multinational companies is much higher than ours. In addition, multinational corporations face a dilemma. On the one hand, to transfer profits from joint ventures, on the one hand, it is also necessary to reduce the cost of joint venture companies, and the two cannot be combined.
Faced with increasingly fierce competition in the Chinese market, multinational companies began to transfer R&D operations to China. Wang Delun believes that they will not move key technologies to China. SAIC GM’s “Pan Asia†is a good example. It is at best Two and three stream development agencies.
Regarding the rise of China's auto brands, will multinational companies take measures to prevent them, such as technical blockades? Wang Delun believes that this is more than enough for them, the global economy is already a whole, such as Lifan Automobile, the engine is using Siemens components, matching in France; the chassis of the next car will be developed in Detroit, Electronics Partially done in the UK. "You can either send experts to the country to do it or you can leave the project to go out and do it." The East is not bright in the West. As long as we have the ability to integrate, use the world's most advanced technology, ask them to do their strengths, modeling Italy companies, structure to find Japanese companies, inexpensive South Korea, our experts control the overall program, master the core technology.
Wang Delun said that no one company can afford to pack the world, and there is no need to pack the world. Making the engine is the strength of Lifan. It produces 2.5 million motorcycle engines a year. It does not do one part of its own. It sounds incredible. Lifan's success lies in its ability to integrate. Lifan annually produces more than 1 million motorcycles and 2.5 million engines, all of which are invested by Lifan and require more than 300 billion yuan. From 1992 to 2002, Lifan's output value increased from 200,000 yuan to 4 billion yuan in 10 years. If you rely entirely on Lifan's own strength, it is absolutely impossible to achieve. Wang Delun said that Lifan will use the same method to make cars and integrate the resources of the entire world to build cars. No matter what parts, whoever does it well will find someone to do it. For example, the cylinder does not do it because we don't make cylinders. The body of experts, we only need to do a good job of supervision and management.
Wang Delun said that foreign R&D centers are not doing all the work. They mainly do integration work. In the future, Lifan will not build an R&D center for more than 1,000 people. Instead, it will package out one project per project, like the American Automobile Company. Please do what the best people do, and do your own integration and integration work. (Cheng Yuan)
