Recently, the Toyota Group initiated five recalls worldwide, involving nearly 6.4 million vehicles, and recalled a total of 6.76 million vehicles and 60,000 vehicles in China. Five batches of recalled vehicle airbag cables, seats, engine starters, steering columns, and windshield wiper motors were flawed.
Recall rankings in recent years
The combined number of these five recalled vehicles reached 6.76 million. As some vehicles involved multiple recalls, a total of 6.39 million vehicles were involved, and there were only 825,000 vehicles in Europe alone. Recall covers markets in the United States, Europe, China, and Japan, involving 27 models.
The recalled products include Toyota Group's models such as Camry, RAV4, Corolla, Yaris, Matrix and Highlander. In addition, Pontiac Vibe, which Toyota and GM have jointly built in the United States, and Subaru (part of Toyota), Trezia, are also recalled. Vehicle production time is between April 2004 and August 2013.
This is one of Toyota’s top-ranking recalls in recent years. Ranked first in 2012 was the recall of 7.43 million vehicles with fire hazards, followed by the recall of 7.12 million vehicles with faulty floor mats from 2009 to 2012, and the third was the recall of 4.45 million accelerator pedal vehicles in 2010. Of the five recalls, the largest 3.5 million can be ranked fourth.
Since both the second and third largest recalls mentioned above involved automatic acceleration of the throttle, there were also combined calculations of the two, totaling more than 11.56 million vehicles, making it the largest vehicle recall incident in history. However, there are some differences in the specific issues of the two recalled vehicles.
Launch 5 recalls
The first is related to the airbag spiral cable assembly of the vehicle. The cable wrapped around the steering wheel may be damaged, causing the warning light to light, and the airbag on the driver's side may not be properly deployed during a collision. The recall affected a total of 3.5 million vehicles, of which 1.67 million were in North America and 130,000 in Europe.
Outside Japan, cable recalls involved RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, Yaris, Yaris, Highlander, Tacoma, Hilux, Fortuner, Innova, Land Cruiser, Prado, Camry and Pontiac Vibe.
The second global recalled 2.32 million vehicles, 670,000 in North America and 90,000 in Europe. The reason is that there is a defect in the seat rail so that the seat cannot be fixed in the adjusted position. Outside of Japan, models involved include Cyan xD, Urban Cruiser, and Yaris.
There may be noise from the third steering column bracket, which involved 760,000 vehicles worldwide, of which 590,000 were in Europe and North America was not affected. Under the maximum load, the steering column bracket is unstable. In some cases, the steering column support may not be able to maintain the position of the steering column. The recall involves Ist, Ractis and Yaris models.
The fourth recall of 160,000 Ractis in Japan replaced the windshield wiper motor.
The fifth involved 20,000 vehicles in Japan and Hong Kong. There was a problem with the engine starter. The last two recalls do not involve other markets.
Involving 60,000 vehicles in China
Recently, Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd., GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd., and Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. have filed a recall plan with the AQSIQ in accordance with the requirements of the "Defective Automobile Product Recall Management Regulations". On the 8th of this month, the following cars were recalled, a total of 61,459 vehicles:
(i) Some of the Reiz cars produced by Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. from November 16, 2005 to August 10, 2010, a total of 47,636 vehicles;
(2) Some of the Highlander vehicles manufactured by GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. from May 27, 2009 to August 31, 2010, a total of 13,752 vehicles;
(3) A total of 71 Highlander automobiles imported from Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. from March 30, 2007 to January 19, 2009.
Some of the vehicles in the recalled area will have friction between the airbags in the spiral coil assembly and the end of the guide groove. Continued use will cause the airbag cables to wear or even break, and the airbag warning light will light up after the cable breaks. The airbag of the driver's seat has failed and there are safety hazards. Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd., GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd., and Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. will replace the improved spiral coil assembly for free in the recalled area to eliminate potential safety hazards.
